Superstorm Sandy Relief // Rockaway, New York

Site Description

Superstorm Sandy devastated the east coast. Crashing into the shoreline with historic force and quickly moving into the heart of New York and New Jersey. After all the waters recede, Sandy will have claimed over 100 lives on the coast, destroyed thousands of homes, left millions without power and even more without hope.

As we drove around days after the storm we saw FEMA stations, relief workers, NYPD, fireman and the National Guard. It was one week after the storm and first response was hard at work, but we couldn’t help but wonder, what will happen to these families in the long run? Who will help them if FEMA or their insurance companies don’t meet all the needs? Who can they turn to then?

Your students will have the opportunity to be a part of the long-term rebuilding from Superstorm Sandy while meeting the needs of families for whom first response was not enough. Students will work on remodeling jobs such as flooring, drywall, painting, siding and roofing. But more importantly, your students will bring the message of Christ’s love to a hurting community — your students will bring a message of hope.

**Due to the amazing response by the body of Christ, Next Step Ministries will be opening a second New York mission trip site. The two sites will be run completely independent of each other (housing, work projects, worship, staff will all be separate). However the sites will be in very close proximity and be practically identical opportunities. The New York information on this page applies to both trips.

Because of the nature of disaster response, specific housing locations will be finalized by April 1st for your summer mission trip. NY#1 will be housed on the East Side of Long Island and NY#2 will be towards the West Side of Long Island.
