FLATWOODS // APPALACHIA BUILD

Site Description

Located in the heart of West Virginia, Braxton County presents the best of rural community living as well as the challenges. You will be amazed by the spectacular beauty of the mountains, but also overwhelmed by the incredible physical needs of the families who call Braxton County “home.”

The Appalachian region is considered one of the most impoverished regions of the United States. Only 42% of individuals living in Braxton County graduated from high school, unemployment is high and more than half of the households fall well below the poverty level. A significant number of homes lack adequate plumbing and kitchen facilities. Many of the work projects center around families who struggle to provide basic amenities for their children or the growing elderly population, who usually live on a fixed income and have no money for house repairs.

Many of the work projects center around families who struggle to provide basic amenities for their children or the growing elderly population, who usually live on a fixed income and have no money for house repairs. You will have the opportunity to build and repair homes for these residents, including work like roofing, siding, drywall, framing, flooring, and more. You will also help to build a new community center in the small town of Rosedale, which will be used as a ministry base for outreach to Braxton County.

In addition to the challenging work, you will partner with small churches and reach out to the community by interacting with the residents and showing them a reason for hope.

On your free day, spend time with the community or relax by the beautiful lakes in the area. Alternatively, we can help you organize a white water rafting trip in the New River Gorge, which is sure to be a fun and exciting experience.

Join us in West Virginia for a life-changing week of work and community outreach.
