Blessed are the Peacemakers

BLESSED are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Matthew 5:9

When we think of peace a lot can come to mind. I first see people with signs marching around chanting to be honest. But the peace that Jesus talks about in this passage means so much more. What it means to be a “peacemaker” like Jesus talks about is rather complex, and truly important because the peacemakers will be called children of God. The peace Jesus talks about is not some nice peaceful easy disposition, but he is referring to those who actively engage in making peace. Actively engage in making peace. That is a choice to make in every instance, every interaction, and every relationship. But most importantly is that this peace making is not enough to be done alone, it is all done with belief in Jesus Christ and done in his name.

Reflection

1. What does it mean to “Actively engage in making peace?”
2. What are some instances today, or in the last few days where you didn’t choose peace and love as Christ would have?
3. Who are some people you need to make peace with? People who have hurt you, or you have hurt. Who are some people you have a hard time keeping peace with and fight with often and need to change? Write two lists of these people down and think about what you are going to do to make peace.

Take the Next Step

Don’t let this command of making peace pass you by. It is going to be difficult I guarantee it, but I also know its worth it. It’s worth it because of the earthly peace that will follow, and its worth it simply because it is what God calls us to do. Go and be a peacemaker with every decision. Show the love and Peace of Christ Jesus to everyone.
