The First Five Blessings (In Review)

Matthew 5:3-7

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy."

Psalm 31:19

"Oh, how abundant is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you and worked for those who take refuge in you."

“God is so good!” How often do you hear people say this phrase? How often do you say it? Though the phrase may be cliché, it could not be closer to the truth. I am often humbled when I step back and look at my life. I have been blessed with so many things in the form of relationships, gifts, forgiveness… salvation. I do not deserve to inherit the earth or receive mercy for my sins, but the Lord’s love penetrates the world’s darkness. The blessings Jesus talks about in Matthew 5 are for all believers and should be practiced by all believers.

Reflection

1. What light do these first five blessings in Matthew shed on how we should treat people?
2. Look at the story of the Prodigal son starting in Luke 15:11. Which of the blessings does this fit with and how does it help explain it?
3. When in your life have you fallen into these categories? Think of specific times. What assurance does God give you in these times?

Take the Next Step

Most people who know me would say that my life has not been that difficult thus far. Of course I have faced hardships and trials in my life, but it has always been easier to list off blessings than challenges. Do you find this to be true in your own life? If so, do you thank God? Are you honoring Him with the blessings He has graciously bestowed upon you? I challenge you to write out seven ways you can be more passionate in blessing others around you and focus on one point each day for a week. You have the opportunity to richly bless others around you whether you know them or not. Go out there and make a difference!
