What the Bible Conveys about Meditation
Week 12 Day 2
“I think of thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the watches of the night”
Psalm 63:6
The idea of meditation is used almost 60 times throughout the Bible and with various meaning such as “listening to God’s word, reflecting on God’s works, rehearsing God’s deeds, rumination on God’s law, and more” as Foster discusses in his book Celebration of Discipline which we will be studying the next few weeks. Meditation may be a foreign idea to us and something not necessarily considered a part of your faith but it sure was to the authors of Scripture!
As we dive into the Psalms as in Psalm 63:6 above, we see so many instances of people meditating on God’s word, God’s work, God’s promises and more. This meditation is just allowing your mind and soul to completely turn to and rely on God. Intensely reflecting on his purpose and his ways, and not our own.
Reflection Questions
1. Where are some places in Scripture where you see people practicing meditation?
Ex. Psalm 1:2, Jeremiah 20:9, Isaiah 6:1-8 and more, google it!
2. Why do you think Meditation has such a big presence in the Bible?
3. What are some ways you can begin to be still, and listen?
Take the Next Step
In all these instances in Scripture of Meditation, these were people who were close to the heart of God. Not because they had special abilities, but because they were willing to listen. Especially in our busy lifestyle now, we need to make a huge extra effort to stop, and just listen to God. To often I find myself to demanding, or my conversations with God being a one-way street. But let our Next Step today be to be still, and listen.
