The Study of Books
Week 15 Day 6
In the language of the sacred writings, we may observe the utmost depth, together with the utmost ease. All the elegancies of human composures sink into nothing before it: God speaks not as man, but as God. His thoughts are very deep; and thence his words are of inexhaustible virtue. And the language of his messengers also, is exact in the highest degree: for the words which were given them accurately answered the impression made upon their minds: and hence Luther says, "divinity is nothing but a grammar of the language of the Holy Ghost." To understand this thoroughly, we should observe the emphasis which lies on every word; the holy affections expressed thereby, and the tempers shown by every writer.
— John Wesley, Preface to the New Testament, 1754.
As we have done with the quotes this week, we can always look to other people and sources to help us understand what the Bible and our faith is all about. Whether it is a devotional book or a deep theological study we can grow so much by looking to others for their understanding and interpretation. It would be ignorant to think that our way of looking at things is the only way, and amazing people with amazing hearts for Christ have lived and are living that can help us through.
Reflection Questions
1. Have you read any kind of devotional book or book for spiritual growth? If not why? If so what did you learnt?
2. What are some spiritual aspects you would like to learn more about? Questions, inspirational or personal topics?
3. What books might be good for you to read? If you don’t know any what can you do?
