God is Holy

1 Peter 1:15-16: “But like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior. Because it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’”

The word “holy” means sacred and pure. Our God is so perfect, so pure and without blemish that even sinless angels in heaven fall before Him saying, “Holy, holy, holy!” God sets the standard for all that is good. How can God expect sinful humans to be holy like Him? It’s a process of choices. We’re called to choose holiness over sin in every part of our life, not just when we’re at church, or around our Christian friends. God knows it’s hard, and He knows we’re going to have to fight our very nature every step of the way. Good news though: He’ll always be there to help us!

Reflection

1. Why do you think that God has such a high expectation of us, to be holy like Him?
2. Does God expect us to achieve this on our own? Can we?
3. What are some ways in your life in which you can choose holiness?

Take the Next Step

If you know something will displease God, don’t do it! When you fall, ask forgiveness and try again. God will always be there to pick you up! Even though God knows we could never possibly be as perfect as Him, we must always be striving to be more like Jesus. One choice at a time, let the pursuit of holiness permeate every part of your life.
