A Father's Dicipline

Hebrews 12:7
"What you endure disciplines you: God is treating you as sons. Is there a son whom his father does not discipline?"

Scattered throughout the Old Testament are stories where we see exactly what God thinks about spiritual disciplines. So many times God has to jump back in and say 'hey, you guys are doing this all wrong.' As part of the church, we all know many rules that we should follow but how often do we miss the point? We see these disciplines as hindrances to a good time, or yet another thing to make life difficult, but we blandly go through the motions because we think that’s enough. But that’s not what God our father wants. These disciplines are all for his kingdom and God is simply teaching his children how to live a better life for him. Whether its reading the bible, praying, being held accountable for negative activities, or going to church on Sunday, disciplines are our way of learning how we should life, and strengthening our relationship with our Father.

Reflection

1. In what way do you view God? As a cop? Judge? Waiter? Father? Lord?
2. What are some disciplines you’re doing now that you need to make sure the focus is on God, and not simply doing the discipline?
3. What disciplines may you need to start doing to help your faith?

Take the Next Step

Often we replace God himself, with the disciplines associated with him; A bland prayer, shallow study, or heartless commitment. But may we get back to the focus, and make all we do for his kingdom.
“Take my life and let it be, consecrated, Lord to thee. Take my moments and my days, let them flow in ceaseless praise.”
